Done Is Better Than Perfect: Why Social Media Success Doesn’t Require Flawlessness

As a business owner, you’ve probably heard it a million times: social media is essential for growing your business. But let’s be honest—managing social media can feel like an energy drain. Between creating content, staying consistent, and keeping up with the latest trends, it’s easy to feel like you’re falling short.

Here’s the thing: your social media strategy doesn’t need to be perfect. In fact, perfectionism is likely holding you back from achieving real results. Embracing the mindset that "done is better than perfect" not only helps you get things done but also allows you to create meaningful content without losing your sanity by creating from a space of inspiration and intentionality.

In this post, we’ll dive into why perfection is overrated, how there’s no one-size-fits-all social media strategy, and why simply showing up can be more impactful than having a perfectly curated presence. We’ll also explore how finding a method that aligns with your values and business goals can make all the difference in building an authentic and sustainable social media presence.

Why There’s No One-Size-Fits-All Social Media Strategy

The social media world is full of rules, templates, and supposed formulas for success. While there’s value in best practices, it’s crucial to understand that your business is unique—you are unique. No single strategy will work for everyone because we all operate under different circumstances.

Here’s why:

  • Lifestyles Are Different: Someone running a side hustle in their spare time won’t have the same bandwidth as a full-time entrepreneur with a dedicated team.

  • Values Are Different: Your business might prioritize authenticity and transparency, while another company might lean heavily into aesthetics and polish both are good but cause the companies to show up differently for the world.

  • Priorities Are Different: If most of your business comes from referrals, your need for a heavy social media presence might be less urgent than someone building an online-only brand.

  • Capabilities and Schedules Are Different: Not everyone has the same skills, tools, or time to dedicate to managing social media.

Trying to force yourself into someone else’s strategy is a recipe for burnout. Instead, focus on a method that aligns with your strengths, resources, and goals.

If It’s Draining You, It’s Not Worth It

Here’s a hard truth: if managing your social media is sucking the life out of you—and it’s not bringing in leads or revenue—then it’s time to re-evaluate.

Yes, there’s value in having a presence on social media. It shows your audience that you’re active, in business, and relevant. But beyond that, social media shouldn’t feel like a chore.

If the effort you’re putting into it isn’t paying off, it’s worth asking yourself:

  • Is this the best use of my time?

  • Am I prioritizing social media over things that actually generate revenue?

  • Could I simplify my approach to make this process easier?

  • Am I using social media as a distraction to keep myself busy versus working on things that will actually facilitate growth and progress?

Social media is just one piece of your marketing puzzle. If it’s not working for you, it’s okay to scale back, adjust, or even outsource when the time is right.

Finding an Authentic Approach to Social Media

A critical part of embracing “done is better than perfect” is finding a method that feels authentic to you. Your social media should align with your values, business goals, and the way you naturally work. When your strategy feels authentic, it becomes more sustainable—and it resonates more deeply with your audience.

1. Start with Your Values

What does your business stand for? If your core values include authenticity and connection, your content should reflect that. Instead of trying to imitate perfectly polished influencers, focus on creating posts that genuinely connect with your audience and showcase who you are!

2. Align with Your Goals

Not every business needs to dominate on social media. Think about what you want to achieve:

  • Are you looking to drive leads?

  • Do you want to build brand awareness?

  • Is your main goal to stay visible for existing clients?

Your strategy should reflect these goals. For example, if most of your business comes from referrals, your social media presence might simply serve to show that you’re active and relevant—not to attract cold leads.

3. Play to Your Strengths

Are you better at talking on video or writing captions? Do you love creating visuals, or does that stress you out? Find a format that feels natural and enjoyable for you. When you lean into what you’re good at, the process feels less like a chore and more like a creative outlet.

4. Work with Your Schedule

If you only have an hour a week for social media, that’s okay. Build a strategy that fits into your available time. For instance:

  • Batch-create content when you’re feeling inspired.

  • Post in the moment when you’re in the mood.

  • Reuse and repurpose content to save time.

Authenticity doesn’t mean you have to be on social media every day—it means showing up in a way that feels true to who you are and how your business operates.

Why “Done Is Better Than Perfect”

One of the biggest traps business owners fall into is overthinking their social media content. You want it to be perfect—well-thought-out, beautifully designed, and perfectly timed. But while you’re waiting for perfection, opportunities are slipping through the cracks (and videos are gathering digital dust in our draft folders).

Here’s why embracing “done is better than perfect” is so powerful:

1. Consistency Builds Momentum

When you prioritize getting content out there, you create consistency, and consistency is what builds trust (and helps improve your confidence and experience). Your audience doesn’t expect perfection; they just want to see you show up. And showing up on repeat is what is going to actually boost your authority.

2. Good Enough Is Better Than Nothing

Let’s say you have a great idea for a video, but you don’t record it because you’re waiting for the perfect lighting, outfit, or caption. The result? It never gets recorded. No one sees it. And you're stuck in the endless cycle of being frustrated because your efforts aren't paying off. You're doing the mental work of coming up with the brilliant idea and envisioning the video and the caption – but that is not enough.

Done is better than sitting in your drafts folder forever.

3. People Care About Value, Not Perfection

Your audience is looking for content that resonates with them, not content that’s flawless. If your post solves a problem, answers a question, or inspires them, they won’t care if it’s not perfectly polished. In fact, they will likely appreciate it because they will feel more seen.

My Strategy to Social Media: Posting When Inspired

For me, the “done is better than perfect” mindset means leaning into inspiration when it strikes. Here’s how I manage my social media:

  • When I’m feeling creative and inspired, I batch-create content. This might mean filming three videos back to back, writing the captions, and editing the videos.

  • Instead of sitting on those videos and waiting for the “right” time, I post them all at once. Why? Because I’d rather have them live on my page where they can reach people now instead of sitting in my drafts never to be posted.

This approach works because social media isn’t about timing perfection (though there are strategies and analytics to help with this); it’s about creating opportunities for people to find you and be inspired or entertained, feel seen and less alone, or learn something new.

When someone stumbles across your content, one of three things happens:

  1. They scroll past it.

  2. They like it and move on.

  3. They visit your profile to learn more.

If they visit your profile, they’ll likely binge-watch your content to decide if you’re worth following. If you don’t have anything posted because you’ve been waiting for perfection, you’ve lost that chance and will not give them a reason to follow you.

The Benefits of Embracing Imperfection

By adopting a “done is better than perfect” approach, you’ll start to see these benefits:

1. More Content, More Opportunities

The more content you put out, the more chances people have to discover and connect with you. Even if every post isn’t a home run, each one adds value to your online presence.

2. Less Stress, More Creativity

Perfectionism creates pressure, and pressure blocks creativity. Letting go of the need to be perfect allows you to experiment and find your voice.

3. Building a Foundation for Growth

If your goal is to eventually outsource your social media, creating a backlog of content now gives you a foundation to build on. Future strategists can refine what you’ve started, but only if you’ve given them something to work with.

When to Outsource Your Social Media

At some point, you might decide that managing your social media isn’t the best use of your time. That’s okay! Outsourcing is a smart move for many small business owners. But outsourcing works best when you’ve already laid a foundation.

By embracing a “done is better than perfect” mindset, you’re not only creating content for your audience now but also setting the stage for future success when you’re ready to bring in a professional.

Social media doesn’t have to be perfect to work for you. By letting go of the need for perfection, finding an approach that aligns with your values, and focusing on showing up consistently, you can create a presence that serves your business without draining your energy.

Remember: your audience doesn’t need perfect posts—they need posts that add value. So the next time you find yourself overthinking, ask yourself, “Is this good enough to help someone?” If the answer is yes, hit publish.

Done is better than perfect, and progress always beats procrastination.

This authentic approach to social media won’t just simplify your life; it’ll also help you build deeper, more meaningful connections with your audience. And when you’re ready to take things to the next level, you’ll already have a strong foundation in place.
